  § Chris the Grad!

 at  { 1 comments }

Last Saturday, my wife and I traveled to New Haven to see her brother’s graduation.  It was a beautiful day; warm with a slight breeze.   You honestly couldn’t have asked for a better day.  The commencement speaker was none other than Richard Vermeil, but you might know him better as Dick… no, that’s not a dirty joke.  Dick Vermeil was the coach portrayed by Greg Kinnear in the movie, Invincible.  As always, it was nice to see my wife’s abuela.  Talk about success… She and her husband bring their 2 children to the US from Puerto Rico and raised 7 more children in the Bronx.  Her abuelos literally sold the farm and they now have one granddaughter who is a clinical therapist, one grandson who is an architect, and another who graduates with a music management degree!!!  That’s literally the American Dream if I have ever heard one.

Check out this picture and then enjoy the slideshow below.

  § OOOOOOOPPPPPSSSSS!

In an attempt to set my email up to respond to incoming emails over the holiday weekend, I mistakenly set it up to respond to ALL the emails in my inbox….

I am sorry to those of you that received that email…
To those of you that received multiple… I AM SOOOOOO SORRY!  eeek
Lesson learned…
See Diana, this is why I should just have an iPhone… so I can respond to emails as they come in no matter where I am.  :D
Since there is NO way I will ever be allowed to purchase an iPhone as long as it is not on the Verizon network, I will be accepting donations towards a phone and a years service.  (Kidding of course)

  § Memorial Day Weekend

 at  { 9 comments }

I have been racking my brain trying to come up with a weekend since Christmas where I have not been busy and had time to just spend time with family and friends and….. nope, not one. Thank God for the extended weekend because it gave me something I was desperately in need of. On Saturday Diana and I drove to Connecticut to see her brother graduate from the University of New Haven. Then it was back in the car for a 3 and a half hour drive to Saratoga where I grew up to spend our traditional family weekend together. On Sunday, I helped my father get some work done on my grandmother’s new deck he is building for her and then it was play time with Fitzy and the Powers family on the (UPPER) Hudson River his father’s new pontoon boat. I capped the weekend off with a drive with my father to see my brother’s grave at the Saratoga National Cemetery along with his battle buddy, Nathan P. Brown.

Here are two of the boating trip pictures… SEE THE REST HERE

Check back later to see Chris’ graduation photos… some are not to miss!

  § We have a winner!

 at  { 12 comments }

So I have been running a double secret (probation) contest and give a prize to the person who wrote the 200th comment on my blog.  And you, Eric Foley, are the winner (even though you insult my taste in baseball teams).  You will be receiving your $10 iTunes giftcard at the PUG meeting tonight!

Does any know where the line “double secret probation” comes from? Hint: Every other guy has this poster hanging on their wall in COLLEGE.

  § Baseball is life, the rest is just details!

 at  { 12 comments }

Growing up, baseball was only semi-important to me.  Girls were important.  Making ramps to jump my bike off of was even more important.  Trying to have as much fun as possible without my father catching on… that was VERY important.  But the older I get, the more important baseball becomes to me… to a point, it’s a metaphor that defines my life.

I have so many amazing memories of my childhood, thanks in large part to my father.  He was always one of the volunteer coaches that would help out in any way possible.  He would purchase things that needed to be bought.  He would crouch down to be a catcher so pitchers could practice their fastballs and elementary curve-balls.  I crack up as I wrote that last sentence because I remember one time when he was catching for a pitcher and the ball curved a little more than he anticipated…WHACK, a new pair of glasses needed to be ordered.  He was always there… not one of those parents that drops their kid off and leaves.  Certainly not one of those parents that drops their kid off and is late picking them up.   He took me to my first Yankee game when I was in grade school and I still remember the first time I walked out of the tunnel to see the grass and my favorite player, Don Mattingly… (CHILLS).
Baseball has changed for me as I have learned more about life.  In baseball, you have to sacrifice to advance.  Sometimes you have to swing for the fences and not be afraid to fail, but you also have to remember that hitting small gets you on base.  You have to know when you are down and need rest so you can perform to your potential.   Just because you have more money than anyone else, does not mean you will be successful (aka, 2008 Yankee season).  You have to remember where you came from and honor your past.  You are certain to get hit, so just walk it off and take your lickings “like a man.”
Those are just a few of the many things baseball has taught me as I have gotten older.  Now, on to the pictures.
No Más is a D.J.  (Just Googled it)

Diana’s new Jeter shirt… she says he has a nice butt.

There isn’t much here I don’t have.  Some call it obsession, I call it devotion.

My father, brother and I used to go to Baseball card shows… we even had Hank Aaron sign a baseball once.

Each time I do this walk, I can FEEL the excitement brewing in my inners

As much as I love sitting down by the players, I love to be a part of the upper deck crew… they are so much fun and there is always something to look at.

Let the chills commence

During college I worked at a coffee shop.  There was a drink I used to make all the time for this one guy… a decaf coffee with a shot of decaf espresso.  We called it “what’s the point?”  Perfect title for this guy!

“Hey Wang, check out the girl in the third row with the red top and blonde hair.”

Diana, if you make a funny face, it will end up on my blog.  After ten months, you know this!!!

  § Why Sisters Are THE COOOOOLEST!

 at  { 1 comments }

You have seen pictures of my little sister and how adorable she is… but what I have failed to mention is just how creative she is.  She thinks on a totally higher level than most people her age when it comes to life and it really shows when she is being artistic.

She recently had a creative writing assignment where the class (of 12 year olds) had to write an obituary for “someTHING” and not some one…

Here is what she wrote… again, she is twelve:

———————————————————————————-
C. Cake

On May 5, 2008 C. Cake died. She was almost 2 days old, which was very old for her kind. She had lived with her mother who was name Marble Cake, her father who was named Vanilla Cake, and her sister Cupcake in the bakery at Hannaford. Then she moved into my grandmother’s refrigerator, where she met her friends whipped cream, soda can, eggs, and ham and cheese sandwich. Her full name was Chocolate cake. Her friends called her C.C.

C.C. met her worst enemies, fork, knife, and plate on the table. C.C. died when knife divided her into pieces and fork and plate teamed up to get rid of her. C.C. was eaten by nine people and, I must admit, she was tasty. There was no surviving part of her.

C.C. was very successful. She was put on the top shelf of the display case, which was a big honor. She also won the most frosting award, the half-price award and finally, the $15.00 award.

C.C. will have her burial in two days or less. She will be buried in a sucking, watery, whirling white bowl. It will be a private funeral, so there will be no last words. She will have no headstone.

  § Home Sick & Homesick

 at  { 4 comments }

(Pictures are at the bottom for those of you who don’t read)

I guess I have been wearing myself thin lately because I caught a head cold that came to fruition over the weekend.  So today I am taking a sick day to get well.   Normally, I wouldn’t think twice about it, but there are only 24 teaching days left until final exams begin.  There is a lot of information to cover/review and I have really enjoyed teaching this year as I reflect upon those day to day happenings that make my job interesting.

This weekend, I went home with my wife and her parents to have the postponed burial ceremony for my paternal grandfather .  The weather was perfect with a slight breeze.   The same Honor Guard that helped us lay my brother to rest was there for my grandfather who was a World War II airplane mechanic.  When my brother passed away, I was allowed by the Army to be one of the paul bearers.  Before the ceremony, I trained with the National Guard for two days and watched the flag being folded over and over.  I heard it mentioned that each fold (13 of them) has a meaning.   Here they are: (original text found here)
1. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

2. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
3. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
4. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.
5. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.
9. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
10. The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.
13. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In God We Trust”.

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.

After the ceremony we went to the Montcalm for some tasty food and life stories to laugh about.
The day was also marked by the by an intimate party at my grandmother’s house in celebration of my parents 2oth wedding anniversary on May 7th.  My father and stepmother have taught me more about life than I can ever express, but the most important thing they taught me was how to love your partner and how to be faithful to them in every sense of the word.

<insert embarrassing story about me here>

Diana and her mother watching our wedding video (again!)

I am going to leave you with these two facts about WWII

Fact: 1100 WWII Veterans die each day.
Fact: The flag is not folded 13 times because there are 13 reasons, but rather there are 13 reasons because there are 13 folds.

  § Tagged!

 at  { 6 comments }

I was tagged yesterday by Jason Lanier, another photographer from CA. Getting tagged means I have to answer a series of questions that let everyone know a little more about me. So here goes!

The rules-1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning. 2. Each player answers the questions about themselves. 3. At the end of the post each player the tags 5 players and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

What was I doing ten years ago: I was just finishing high school and getting ready to go to college. My mother had just passed away a few months earlier so I was just beginning to see how tough life really is. I had a lot of support from friends and family who helped me get through tough days.

5 things on my to do list today:

   1. Tell my wife I love her.
   2. Grade papers/Teach/Learn
   3. Run (getting ready for a big relay race with a few students and fellow teachers…see here)
   4. Drive back to where I grew up for my grandfather’s funeral and my to celebrate my parents 20th anniversary (father and stepmother).
   5. Blog/Photos/Read blogs/Comment on blogs/

3 bad habits:
   1.  I bite my fingernails when I get stressed
   2.  Calling coffee (and only coffee) breakfast
   3.  Chimping when I take photos as proven by Meg

5 Places I have lived:
   1.  Granville, NY  (Slate capitol of the world)
   2.  South Glens Falls, NY (Go Bulldogs!!!)
   3.  Albany, NY  (while attending The College Saint Rose)
   4.  Sevilla, Spain (Hace 7 años que viví allí para ser un profe)
   5.  Amawalk, NY  (Where I now live with my amazing wife.  See my morning view HERE)

Why am I into photography:  I have always searched for a creative outlet; drawing, painting… even made a few cards for my wife as I was dating out of construction paper, but I never found something that made me feel proud of what I do.  I have heard other photographers say they feel like a ROCK STAR when they shoot… I can see what they mean. I personally shoot because I want that memory of that moment to last forever.  I want to make people smile, cry, laugh… I want people bring people joyful memories and share those special moments with them.

5 people I want to know more about:  I have chosen 5 of my favorite photographers who I aspire to have the quality of photography they have (besides Jason L. who already posted) and who I believe are at the top of the list in the US.  These people are not marketing their photography to other photographers, but shooting great quality stuff, day in – day out).  The following are in no particular order… each one is on the same level in my book for different reasons.

v>1.  Bumatay

2.  Ruby of Dazzling Images
3.  Fred Egan of Behind the Camera
4.  Joy Moody
5.  Eric Langlois of Raw Photo Design

  § Wedding with Tania

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to shoot another wedding with Tania. Jill and Bob were an extremely camera-comfortable couple who had the story book wedding and reception at Saint Clements Castle in CT. Here are a few of my favorite images from the day.
