  § Ciudad de Rodrigo(SP)/Border Town(PORTUGAL): Day 9

 at  { 6 comments }

After the students got out of their last class today, we headed off to Ciudad de Rodrigo, a city an hour outside of Salamanca, for  Carnaval.  We bought costumes and face paint to join into the festivities like the Spaniards.  While we were there, most of the students attended a bull fight with the other Spanish teacher.  After the event, we headed to Portugal just to get some bread.  Tomorrow, we are headed back towards Madrid with a few stops along the way for our last day in Spain.

  § Salamanca: Day 8

Today as part of their class, the school took the kids to a market place where they sell fresh fish, meat and cheese.  These kind of markets always interest me… cow tongue, pig stomach, bull testicles, rabbit hearts, and so much more.

Tomorrow, we are headed to Carnaval in a town outside of Salamanca.  Some who can stomach it will get to see a bull fight, others will enjoy the festival.  Of course, I will be with my camera to capture the moments!  Sadly, tomorrow will also be our last day in Salamanca before we head back towards Madrid on Sunday morning.j

  § Salamanca/Segovia: Day 6 & 7

So sorry to all of my faithful blog followers for the lack of pictures yesterday.  It was a long day and I literally passed out after coming home.

Yesterday, the other teacher on the trip and I took a stroll to the 2000 year old Roman bridge to check it out up close and to cross it to see the city in the background. spain00008

Today, we headed off to Segovia to see the Alcazar (Arabic-built castle for the Christians) and the Roman aqueducts that are 2000 years old and made without one drop of mortar.

  § Salamanca/Avila: Day 5

As I walk around Spain, I can’t help but wonder why on God’s Earth, anyone would ruin such a beautiful thing… like a 1000+ year old church, by spray-painting their “tag” on it. Don’t get me wrong, I love graffiti art, just in the right places (like your own wall).  This is the door to a shop that the owner had artwork put on it… now it’s surrounded by tags.

I don’t remember this much graffiti everywhere when I was living here 8 years ago or in Spain three years ago during my second trip. ARRRG!

ARRRR… I found out this morning that the Internet problem I am having is not a general problem, rather a problem with Internet in my room.  Fantastic.  Anyway… two pictures for the price of one!

  § Out chasing windmills

It’s been a while since I blogged and for that, I apologize.  I have been getting my ducks in order because I am off to España today with a colleague and 18 of our students.  I’m psyched for this trip and not just because I get to reconnect with the country that helped to form me to become the person I am today, but also because my students will get a very similar opportunity that I received.  They are going to live with a host family, take classes in Spanish, and sight see in a mini study abroad experience similar to the one I had myself 8 years ago.

I’m going to try my best to blog every day while on the trip with at least one photo in each post, so be sure to check back in to see what’s going on.  I will be gone from today, Feb. 12,  until February 23.
